The GE Multilin 489-P1-HI-A20-E was an integrated protection, monitoring, and management device for small and medium-sized synchronous/asynchronous generators. It integrated comprehensive electrical protection, mechanical condition monitoring, control logic, and communication functions, and was suitable for self-contained power plants, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, industrial power generation, and backup power systems. This series is now discontinued, and its replacement model is the GE Multilin 889.


Model Code Analysis


489 is the core series, a dedicated platform for generator management and protection. P1 current transformer input specifications: 1A phase CT secondary side standard input HI. Wide AC/DC power supply, compatible with 90–300VDC or 70–265VAC power supplies. A20 I/O configuration: standard digital input/output combination, including 9 DI channels, multiple DO channels, and analog interfaces. E Enhanced display: equipped with a large-size LCD panel, supporting local parameter viewing and diagnostics.


Core Functions

Comprehensive Electrical Protection: Provides a full range of generator protection including stator differential, overcurrent, grounding, over/undervoltage, over/underfrequency, reverse power, loss of excitation, loss of synchronism, negative sequence, and overexcitation. Supports definite-time, inverse-time, and instantaneous action modes, compatible with ANSI and IEC standard curves, and can independently configure trip, alarm, or auxiliary output action logic.


Mechanical and Condition Monitoring: Integrates RTD temperature monitoring (stator winding, bearings, core), vibration analog input, and bearing thermal protection. It collects generator mechanical status in real time, supports over-limit alarms and protection linkage, and improves equipment reliability throughout its entire lifecycle.


Measurement and Control: High-precision measurement of three-phase current, voltage, power, power factor, frequency, and harmonics, with an accuracy of ±0.5%. It includes built-in interfaces for synchronization detection, automatic synchronizing, circuit breaker control, anti-pumping, automatic reclosing, and excitation regulation. It supports custom programmable logic to achieve automated control of start-up, shutdown, grid connection, and load regulation.


Event and Fault Diagnosis: Features SOE event recording, fault waveform recording, waveform capture, and operation log storage. It supports IEEE 1588 PTP precision time synchronization, enabling accurate tracing of fault timing and causes, shortening troubleshooting time.


Communication and Protocols: Standard Ethernet interface, supporting Modbus TCP, DNP3.0 Level 2, IEC 61850, and other protocols; serial port supports Modbus RTU, DNP3.0, and IEC 103; compatible with PRP/HSR network redundancy, allowing connection to SCADA, DCS, and smart power plant systems for remote monitoring and maintenance.
